The village of Velké Petrovice is located near the town of Police nad Metují in the southern part of the Polic Cretaceous Basin. The districts of Maršov, Petrovice and Petrovičky form part of the village. The village was founded sometime around the mid-13th century; the first record of it dates back to 1255. The village was first part of the Náchod estate, after which it belonged to the Břevnov Benedictine monastery in Police nad Metují. The village’s natural attractions include diverse clay limestone formations with unique Hercynian-type flora, with steep valleys through which the Metuje River and Ledhujský stream wind. On a stroll through the villages around here, one can still admire the original 18th-19th-century farm buildings, numerous wayside shrines out in the fields, and trees that are hundreds of years old.
