Church of Saints George and Martin in Martínkovice

The Church of Saints George and Martin in Martínkovice is one of the most prominent and valuable sacred buildings in the Broumov region. Proudly standing on a hill above the Stěnava River, right in the center of the local cemetery, it dominates the surrounding landscape, particularly when viewed from the roads leading from Broumov to Otovice or Rožmitál. Its elevated position, though somewhat rugged and challenging to reach, gives the church a unique atmosphere that draws visitors deep into the history and spiritual depth of the place.

History and Architecture
This Baroque church is unique within the so-called Broumov group of churches. Unlike most of the others, it was not designed by the famous Dientzenhofer family but was built according to plans by Martin Allio, the architect responsible for the reconstruction of the Broumov monastery church of St. Adalbert. Construction took place between 1692 and 1698, and the church represents early Baroque architecture with direct influences from northern Italy. The floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, an architecturally rare design, and the central part is topped with an elegant dome. Interestingly, the church stands on the site of an older wooden chapel, first recorded as early as 1384. In the mid-17th century, a brick tower was added to the original structure, and it was preserved during the construction of the new stone building. To this day, the tower remains a historic feature connecting the past with the present.

Interior
Inside, visitors are immediately captivated by the frescoes painted in 1748 by the renowned Baroque artist Felix Antonín Scheffler. His work creates dramatic scenes that serve both as spiritual expressions and artistic treasures. On the ceiling of the presbytery, Saint George is depicted in gleaming armor, standing over a slain dragon and being welcomed by the Holy Trinity and the Virgin Mary. The scene is surrounded by angels holding the instruments of the saint's martyrdom - sword, spear, wheel, chains, and scourges, adding deeper symbolism of suffering and the triumph of good over evil. Another fresco depicts Saint Martin, the church's second patron, ascending to the heavens accompanied by angels. This decoration emphasizes the significance of both saints, not only for the local parish but also for the region’s entire religious heritage. The church’s main altar is adorned with monumental statues of Saints Lawrence and Stephen, dating from the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The altar also includes a Gothic statue of the Madonna from the early 15th century, now kept in a secure depository along with other valuable church furnishings. This highlights the cultural and historical value of the church’s interior.

Music and Organ
The church’s organ is a true rarity, it is the only surviving instrument built by Franz Süssmuth, a renowned organ builder from Broumov. Constructed between 1769 and 1771, this single-manual instrument with 744 pipes has remained almost entirely in its original condition. After decades of silence, it was restored in 2010 and now resonates once again during services and concerts. The organ not only enriches the musical experience of the church but also represents a significant part of Broumov’s musical heritage.

Church Grounds and Surroundings
The Church of Saints George and Martin is surrounded by a historic cemetery, complemented by a beautiful Baroque gate flanked by a chapel and a mortuary. Together with the nearby Baroque rectory, renovated in the Late Baroque style, they form a harmonious and historically significant complex. The rectory is among the most important buildings in the village.

Present Day and Significance
Access to the church is somewhat difficult, as the path leads uphill and is relatively steep, though it is possible to drive up with some effort. Although the church is currently closed to the public, its remarkable location, architecture, and historical value make it an unforgettable symbol of Martínkovice and the entire Broumov region. In recent years, the church underwent a full renovation thanks to support from the Ministry of Culture, the church, and the local municipality—a testament to the commitment to preserve this cultural treasure for future generations. Unfortunately, in 1990 the church was robbed, and several valuable sculptures were stolen, including wooden figurines from the nativity scene—marking a sad chapter in its history. Despite this, the church remains one of the most precious early Baroque churches in Bohemia, continuing to attract scholars and lovers of sacred architecture from near and far.
