Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows at Hvězda
Perched at an altitude of 674 metres atop the Hvězda peak in the Broumov Walls, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows rises between sandstone rocks as a remarkable example of High Baroque architecture. It was designed in 1732–1733 by renowned architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer during the height of his career. The chapel was built on the site of a former cross with a golden star, and it is the star-shaped floor plan that became both the symbol and architectural foundation of the entire structure. Today, the chapel is considered the most visited point in the Broumov Walls – a spiritual landmark, a crossroads of hiking trails, and an icon of the region. Dientzenhofer's mastery lies not only in the architecture itself, but also in the sensitive integration of the structure into the surrounding landscape.

Symbolism, Shape, and Location
The chapel's floor plan forms a five-pointed star – a design that is both symbolic and spatially ingenious. The exterior is articulated with pilaster strips, while the interior features a central circular space with semicircular niches in each point of the star. Above the centre rises a dome, crowned by a lantern topped with a gilded star. The chapel is delicately positioned at the edge of a sandstone cliff, connected by a stone bridge that spans a crevice and links it to a scenic terrace. From here, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Broumov Basin, Javoří Mountains, Owl Mountains, Jestřebí Mountains, and, on clear days, even the Polish Wałbrzych Mountains. The chapel was originally consecrated in 1733, but was secularised in 1786 during the reforms of Emperor Joseph II and passed into private hands. Fortunately, it escaped destruction and was restored in 1853, then reconsecrated two years later. Since then, it has preserved its spiritual significance and architectural integrity.

Hike to Hvězda
Several marked hiking trails lead to Hvězda. You can begin your ascent from the village of Hlavňov via the red or blue trail, or from Křinice, Pěkov, or Hony via yellow, red, or blue routes. The elevation gain is approximately 300 metres, but the reward for your effort is a unique blend of architecture, nature, and panoramic views.

Architecture
Inside the chapel, you'll find a ceiling fresco of angelic choirs, harmoniously integrated into the circular central space. The softly arched windows in smooth sandstone frames let in diffused light, illuminating the vaults and niches. The structure is built of finely dressed sandstone blocks and reinforced with architectural elements such as cornices, pilasters, and ornamental lintels. The roof is domed, with gabled segments rising above the star points. The lantern features five tall windows and is topped with a small roof and a golden star. The main entrance faces west and is marked by a moulded portal with a cornice bearing a gently arched centre.

Hvězda Chalet
Next to the chapel stands the well-known Hvězda Chalet, built in 1856 by Abbot J. N. Rotter in the Alpine style. It's an ideal place to rest after the climb and recharge before continuing your journey through the Broumov Walls.
