“From secluded Machov to the walls and you can choose to descent steeply or more gently”
We will set out from the square in the small town of Machov, which in ancient times was the seat of weavers and smugglers and lies hidden under the monumental Mt. Bor “The Gurad of Kłodzko”. We begin by following the red marked trail to the hamlet of Řeřišný around which we can find thistle meadows and peaty meadows with very rich species diversity. These meadows have been prepared for inclusion as Sites of Community Importance on the national list of Natura 2000 Protected Areas due to the occurrence of the rare moss Drepanocladus vernicosus. We continue from the gamekeeper’s lodge in Řeřišný along the red trail to the Broumovské stěny NNR and gain height on the green marked trail which we will appreciate later. On Mt. Božanovský špičák (773 m), the highest peak of the Broumov walls we follow the yellow marked trail through a rocky maze. From the summit we will have wonderful views of Radkow in Poland and to Mt. Szczeliniec Wielky (919 m) which is the highest peak of the Polish Gór Stolówych mountains and the Polish National Park of the same name.
We continue along the ridge of the Broumovské stěny by following the green and then the yellow trails to the north–west where we can admire the rugged terrain and enjoy the monumental views from the ridge. The walls below us are so steep that we are looking down on the Broumovská kotlina basin up to 300 metres below.
Above the village of Slavný we transfer to the red marked ridge trail from which we can again enjoy views into the basin and to the Javoří hory range to the north–east. The geomorphology of this range will tell us that they are of volcanic origin. Here we can stop for refreshments at the Hvězda tourist chalet, which was built in 1856 in an Alpine style from the original gamekeeper’s lodge. After stopping at the Hvězda chapel, which is one of the baroque masterworks by the architect K. I. Dietzenhofer, we can either descend steeply to Křinice – one of extensive walled farmyards have been preserved and the settlement has been declared a Village Historical Reserve. On the other hand we could stay on the red trail (Jiráskova stezka), and descend the gentler slopes of the Broumov wall to Police nad Metují. If we choose Police as our destination the most beautiful way to get there is certainly down through the wild Kovářova rokle ravine. If you follow the yellow marked trail around the village of Suchý důl the dramatic impression from this rocky theatre will stay with you long after you leave Broumovsko. We hope you enjoyed you visit and will come again soon.
