Tips of the Broumov Area
Broumovská skupina kostelů (Broumov Group of Churches)
The baroque churches, the so-called “Broumov Group”, built in the villages of the Břevnov-Broumov abbey by Christoph Dientzenhofer and his son Kilian Ignatius, form a unique architectonic monument of the region.
The churches were built in quite a short time in the years 1719-40. They are a result of unusual building and economic expansion initiated by the abbot Othmar Zinke – a very efficient head of the Břevnov-Broumov abbey.
Despite the undoubted economy of design, these village churches show uniqueness and creative originality worthy of the famous name of its authors – the Dientzenhofer father and the son.
The following buildings are concerned: the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the Church of St. Barbara in Otovice, the Church of St. Margaret in Šonov, the Church of the Holy Trinity in Heřmánkovice, the Church of St. James the Great in Ruprechtice, the Church of St. Anne in Vižnov, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Vernéřovice, the Church of St. Wenceslas in Broumov, the Star Chapel /Hvězda/ in the Broumov Walls /Broumovské stěny/.
The Church of SS Martin and George in Martínkovice is the work of the architect Martin Allius.
