Tips of the Broumov Area
Benediktinský klášter /Benedictine Monastery/ in Broumov
The Broumov Monastery is listed in the list of protected national monuments of the Czech Republic due to its architectonic and cultural value. The premises stand in close vicinity to the square, in the north-eastern part of Broumov, on the highest point of the rocky spur above the Stěnava River.
The present look is a result of the middle baroque reconstruction (1726-48) in accordance with the project of Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Dientzenhofer is also the author of the design of the monastery interior decorations carried out by the leading artists of the Prague baroque – the stuccoworker Bernard Spinetti, the fresco painter Jan Karel Kovář or the painter Felix Antonín Scheffler.
Despite the fact that the building is mostly not used these days, it is possible to visit its most interesting premises with a guide as part of a tour: the monastic church of St. Adalbert, the sacristy, the refectory (a copy of the Turin Shroud is exhibited there) and the monastic library. The library is one of the most precious well-preserved monastic libraries in the Czech Republic. These days, approximately 17,000 books are stored there.
A copy of the so-called Turin Shroud, which was found in the monastic church above the Chapel of the Holy Cross in 1999, is exhibited in the monastic refectory. It dates back to 1651 and it was a gift from the Turin bishop Bergirius to the Broumov abbot Sobek of Bílenberk. There are around 40 copies worldwide, this one, however, is a unique copy in Central Europe, the only copy located to the north of the Alps. The age of the relic, in which the dead body of Jesus is painted, is precisely documented by an authentic document attached to the robe.
